Last Word
stories
We at Last Word Intimate Hotels & Safari Camps are doubly excited about the new year. Why so? We're celebrating a milestone; this year marks our twentieth anniversary of 'lovely people, lovely places'.
Two decades ago, the quaint village of Franschhoek became the cornerstone of the family business hospitality legacy, starting with Last Word Franschhoek. We are grateful for our fantastic team, without whom none of this would be possible. Our guests are the ones for whom our hearts skip a beat. We are grateful for your ongoing support of our life's work underpinned by love. This all-important sentiment is what keeps us together. Over the years, our team's constant care and commitment have seen our hospitality brand flourish despite many challenges beyond our control.
Home is where the heart is.
Consider coming to stay with us when you're next visiting Franschhoek. Here's all you need to know about what differentiates us from our peers in the Banhoek Valley.
Our village location is within walking distance of boutique shops, world-renowned fine dining restaurants, casual locally-inspired dining options, alfresco-style dining, bookstores, clothing, decor shops, art galleries, and local markets. A treasure trove of experiences awaits. Ask our team what will suit your tastes in the valley.
The blue and white eclectic decor is a unique feature of our reception room. Inspired by the classic French navy, the wall colour houses a carefully chosen collection of antique blue and white plates. The nearby Bloody Mary station is a popular spot to regard the setting while mixing the perfect pre-dinner cocktail. Each blue and white wall plate has a history and has been hand-picked from antique stores and local markets - there are approximately 120 plates on the wall. Watch this space.
The ceramic installation in the reception area is part of a larger rejuvenation project that concluded at the property last year. Embracing the area's inviting blue and white theme continues through the hotel's public spaces. Think striped umbrellas, sun loungers, swimming pool pillows for sun lounging and French-inspired planters to add to the European flavour.
Last Word has moved away from buffet-style breakfasts in favour of creating individual platters served to each table at breakfast: a tiered arrangement of seasonal fresh fruit, pastries, local cheeses and meats for each table coupled with a great choice of hot breakfast options served with the secret ingredient, a happy smile! We asked Nicky Coenen, Last Word's Group General Manager, why she thinks a stay at Last Word Franschhoek is worthwhile.
"Privacy is key to our hospitality experience. Our ten beautifully appointed rooms and suites are only available to in-house guests. Speaking to the heart of beyond boutique: there are private spaces to relax and unwind.Being located on Huguenot Street means we're a minute's walk to shops and restaurants. Our General Manager Conrad and Assistant Manager Franklin have lived in the area for 15 years and know the best places to visit. They will help plan your day and make recommendations based on your wants and desires. Some of our team members, like the darling couple Nita and Ellis, have been with us for almost 20 years. We are known for our genuine warmth in hospitality. The premise 'arrive as a friend leave as part of the family' springs to mind.
"Booking with us is a cinch whether you choose to book online or with Taryn and Widad in our reservations team. We look forward to welcoming you to stay at our foundation property.

There is something about being in the wild that feels different. Maybe you’ll discover your roots or on the other hand become more responsible for nature and its survival
