Described as an easy walk with spectacular and rewarding views at its peak, the Constantia Nek hike is a perfect bout of light exercise for the whole family. Starting on the forestry Constantia Nek Road with a marked entrance to the trail, the walk will take you around two dams that were built over 100 years ago named the Woodhead and Heli Hutchinson Dams. A running stream will be approached, beneath a small bridge in the rainy winter months and a hidden fountain just fifteen minutes further up. You can enjoy a light picnic lunch at the top near the dams and meander home upon a gentle decline to the car park.
This is the ultimate outdoor activity for dads and young boys but can be enjoyed by all. Arrive back at The Last Word Hotel for warm tea and fresh scones in the lounge before the ultimate scrabble battle ensues.
Open seven days a week from 8:30 to 18:30, this awesome little track at Constantia Uitsig wine estate is a largely hidden adventure gem in the Constantia Valley. Launched at the beginning of 2015, the park undergoes constant updates to keep it safe, child friendly and adventurous enough for those serious bikers who’d like to spray some dirt.
“Featuring a variety of pump tracks currently totalling 2.8 kms, there are beginner jump lines all the way to expert drop-offs, rock gardens, a wooden berm, rollers and a suspension sky bridge (that tracks the canopy of the trees) ending in a corkscrew exit,” claims the estate.
The park was designed by downhill world champ, Chris Nixon who promises a dual slalom race track and Bike Barn – an ideal cyclist’s pit-stop and spectator hideout in the next few months. Watch this space!
Entrance is merely R50 a day with no charge for spectators and biking enthusiasts can utilize the facilities anytime they like for just R750 a year. (Pssst… in winter there is a special R30 off peak charge between 9 and 9am daily!)

Our official restaurant, just behind The Last Word Constantia, is an old favourite with a new idea. Now you can enjoy the best of four restaurants under one roof at Peddlars & Co. Volare Fine Food offers contemporary dining with a twist, the Local is the timeworn favourite for sports fans, craft beer drinkers and burger lovers alike while the Oak Terrace offers exquisite al fresco dining comprised of beautiful green salads and wholesome homemade lunches. The best place for family at Peddlars & Co is Graciales, social sharing where contemporary Spanish tapas meet exciting cocktails, cooldrinks and wines with flare and flavour.
This is the place to eat lunch or dinner with your family on a wintry Cape Town day. On the menu you’ll find anything from Chef Brad’s famous beef Tataki to grilled chorizo with garlic bread. What’s more the Oak Terrace just released a new kiddie’s menu which is available in Graciales and the other two restaurants as well.
Did you know that tapas at Graciales are now two for three, all day, Monday to Sunday during winter? All mains on the Volare, Local and Oak Terrace menus are also two for one where you get the more affordable meal free.
View the full menu at Graciales and find the full wine and cocktail lists on the Peddlars & Co Pinterest page.

While Acrobranch is located in the gorgeous Constantia Nek forest, the sublime Tokai forest is a little closer to home at The Last Word Constantia and offers exquisite picnicking opportunities, friendly running, walking, cycling and horse riding trails and beautiful family photographing opportunities.
It’s a Constantia landmark and is nestled nearby to various restaurants, wine farms and the Steenberg shopping centre.

The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway at Kirstenbosch Gardens is a remarkable sight for all who visit the national reserve. Inspired by the winding skeleton of the boomslang (tree snake) this aerial bridge winds its way artfully through the Kirstenbosch arboretum and offers spectacular views and surprising free motion as you walk along it. It’s essentially a low maintenance, low impact sculptural raised walkway which takes advantage of the greenest Cape Town treetops in the winter months.
One can visit the walkway with entrance to the abundant, indigenous gardens below where various flora, fauna, tadpole rich streams and quaint cafes and restaurants make for the perfect Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
The gardens are open daily in winter from 8:00 to 18:00 with a R50 entrance fee for adults while children under six get in free.
